How to Print Front and Back ID Cards on A4 Paper Without Distortion

Everyone has done this at least once: you paste phone photos of the front and back of your ID card (such as an Aadhaar card, driver's license, voter ID, or company badge) into Word, hit print, and it comes out the size of a postcard. When you take it to a stationery shop to laminate, it does not fit standard wallet slots or plastic badge holders.

Getting a real-size print on an A4 sheet is simple once you know the exact international dimensions and one critical printer dialog setting.

The Giant Card Printout Problem

When you insert an image into Microsoft Word or Windows Photo Viewer, the software tries to maximize the picture to fill the page margins. If you drag the corner handles manually, you stretch the card disproportionately, distorting fonts, bar codes, and photo proportions.

The Standard CR80 Card Dimensions

Nearly every official ID card and bank card in the world follows the international ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 standard (commonly called CR80):

• Width: 85.60 mm (3.37 inches / ~8.56 cm)
• Height: 53.98 mm (2.125 inches / ~5.40 cm)
• Corner Radius: 3.18 mm rounded corners

If your printed card does not match these exact dimensions, it will not fit inside standard card protectors, lamination pouches, or wallet sleeves.

Side-by-Side vs Stacked Layout

How you format the front and back depends on how you plan to finish the physical card:

• Side-by-Side (Single-Sided Print): Perfect when printing on standard A4 paper or thick photo paper. You print both sides on one face of the paper, cut the strip, fold it down the center crease line, and slip it into a heat lamination pouch. Both sides face outward perfectly.
• Stacked (Top and Bottom): Best when you plan to cut front and back as separate cards and paste them back-to-back, or when using a duplex printer.

The Printer Dialog Trap: Avoid 'Fit to Page'

Even with a millimeter-perfect PDF layout, one wrong click in the printer dialog will ruin your print:

1. Never select "Fit to Page" or "Scale to Fit": This shrinks your document by 4% to 8% to satisfy printer margin safety limits, making your card noticeably smaller than a real ID card.
2. Always select "Actual Size" or set Custom Scale to "100%": This prints the exact millimeter dimensions specified in the file.
3. Choose High Quality / Best: This ensures micro-printed serial numbers and security seals remain sharp and legible.
